Environmental drivers of leaf phenology in trees of the tropical species Ficus obtusifolia Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Ballestrini,Caín; Tezara,Wilmer; Herrera,Ana.
Vegetative as well as reproductive phenology of tropical trees frequently occur synchronously at the end of the dry season. It has been repeatedly observed on two individuals of the tropical species Ficus obtusifolia growing in Caracas that they lose their entire foliage in a period of 48 h during the dry season and renew it within the next 72 h. In order to gain knowledge on the mechanisms that govern leaf exchange in F. obtusifolia, we followed in these two individuals the seasonal changes in leaf and fruit phenology, water relations and environmental variables, and in another 25, phenology only. Although foliar exchange was always observed before the rainy season, it also occurred near the end of the rainy season. An increase in leaf turgor potential of...

Environmental physiology of the bananas (Musa spp.) Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Turner,David W.; Fortescue,Jeanie A.; Thomas,Dane S..
The bananas are thought to be particularly sensitive to changes in the environment. This review considers some historical and recent investigations into the response of the leaf, root and reproductive system to the environment. Monteith's analysis of the response of plants to intercepted radiation is appropriate for analyzing the productivity of bananas and plantains. The banana is sensitive to soil water deficits, and expanding tissues such as emerging leaves and growing fruit are among the first to be affected. As soil begins to dry, stomata close and leaves remain highly hydrated, probably through root pressure. Productivity is affected because of the early closure of stomata. We find the common belief that bananas use large amounts of water does not...

Epibrassinolide regulated synthesis of polyamines and auxins in Raphanus sativus L. seedlings under Cu metal stress Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Choudhary,Sikander P.; Bhardwaj,Renu; Gupta,Bishan D.; Dutt,Prabhu; Kanwar,Mukesh; Arora,Priya.
The effects of various conc of (10-11, 10-9 and 10-7 M) 24-epibrassinolide (24-epiBL) on polyamines and auxins contents was analyzed in 7days old seedlings of Raphanus sativus L. cv. Pusa chetki under copper metal stress. Cu metal (0.2mM) treatment significantly increased endogenous levels of putrescine, spermidine and spermine when compared with control values. Cadaverine content got decreased under metal stress. Endogenous polyamines showed varying levels in seedlings when applying 24-epiBL treatment only. Maximum increase was found in putrescine, cadaverine and spermidine in 10-11, 10-9 and 10-7 M conc of 24-epiBL respectively when applied alone to R. sativus seedlings. However, metal treatment supplemented with 24-epiBL revealed small increase in...

Establishment of sensitive and resistant variety of tomato on the basis of photosynthesis and antioxidative enzymes in the presence of cobalt applied as shotgun approach Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Hasan,Syed Aiman; Hayat,Shamsul; Wani,Arif Shafi; Ahmad,Aqil.
Cobalt (Co) affords both beneficial as well as toxic effects to plants. The present study was performed with an aim to find out the varietal differences among five tomato cultivars against the Co induced changes in growth, photosynthesis, nitrate reductase (E.C.1.6.6.1), carbonic anhydrase (E.C.4.2.1.1), antioxidative enzymes i.e. peroxidase (E.C.1.11.1.7), catalase (E.C.1.11.1.6), superoxide dismutase (E.C.1.15.1.1) and that of proline content. Seeds of tomato (varieties, K-25, NTS-9, NBR-Uday, Sarvodya, and Malti) were soaked in 0, 100, 200 or 300 µM CoCl2 for 0, 4, 8, 12 h (shotgun approach) and sampled at 30 days after sowing. All the varieties showed significantly different response to different treatment combinations. Despite substantial varietal...

Ethylene and abscisic acid in the control of development of the rhizome of Kohleria eriantha (Benth.) Hanst. (Gesneriaceae) Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Almeida,Julieta Andrea Silva de; Kascheres,Concetta; Pereira,Maria de Fátima D.A..
Kohleria eriantha has rhizomes which are underground stems with buds enclosed by modified leaves, that store starch. The buds of this rhizome can develop in two morphological patterns: an aerial shoot (similar to the mother plant) or a rhizome, depending on the water level present in the substrate. Development of the shoot was inhibited by low water availability (1 mL) in the substrate. It was verified that ethylene and ABA were involved in controlling the development of the rhizome pattern under low water availability. Treatments with ethrel, PEG and ABA induced shoot development whereas treatments with AgNO3 or AVG inhibited shoot development. Increased ethylene and ABA were observed under conditions that inhibited shoot development. Moreover, it is...

Ethylene production and acc oxidase gene expression during fruit ripening of Coffea arabica L. Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Pereira,Luiz Filipe Protasio; Galvão,Rafaelo M.; Kobayashi,Adilson K.; Cação,Sandra Maria B.; Vieira,Luiz Gonzaga Esteves.
The phytohormone ethylene is involved in several physiological and developmental processes in higher plants, including ripening of fruits, abscission of organs and tissues, senescence, wound response as well as in other abiotic stresses. The enzyme 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate oxidase (ACO) catalyzes the last step of ethylene biosynthesis. The production of ethylene and the expression of a Coffea arabica ACO gene during the last stages of fruit maturation were investigated. A rapid increase of ethylene production at the green-yellow stage of fruit ripening, after the end of endosperm formation, and a decrease of ethylene production at the cherry stage indicates a climacteric phase during ripening. An ACC oxidase (Ca-ACO) from coffee fruit cDNA was...

Evaluation of hydration indexes in kale leaves Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Calbo,Adonai G.; Ferreira,Marcos D..
Hydration indexes are practical variables for quantifying plant water stress and can be useful for agronomic purposes. Three adapted hydration indexes based on relative water content, volumetric hydration, and leaf turgor pressure were evaluated in kale (Brassica oleracea var. acephala) leaf segments. Relative water content and volumetric hydration were measured in leaf segments after a water infiltration procedure with the aim of filling its large intercellular volumes (@18%v/v). The infiltration was done using a hydrostatic weighing procedure and with the aid of vacuum to fully hydrate the leaf segments. These two relative indexes were proportional to the transpiration-induced leaf water loss. The third index, turgor pressure, was measured with a...

Evaluation of physiological traits in upland rice for adaptation to no-tillage system Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Heinemann,Alexandre B.; Stone,Luís Fernando; Fageria,Nand K.; Castro,Lucas M. de.
In the cerrado region of Brazil, no-tillage is an alternative management practice to conserve soil and reduce cost of crop production. However, many studies have been showed that there is a decrease in the yield when upland rice is cropped in this system. Therefore, there is a need that new breeding initiatives introgress favorable traits into upland rice for no-tillage adaptation. Key traits include faster emergence, ability to germinate when deep seeded, faster root development, and early canopy closure during the vegetative stages. All those traits can be summarized as "early vigor". So, the objective of this study was to evaluate physiological traits of four contrasting parental upland rice cultivars to verify their adaptation to no-tillage system. A...

Evidence of an endogenous lectin receptor in seeds of the legume Cratylia floribunda Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Ramos,Márcio Viana; Bomfim,Liezelotte Rezende; Bandeira,; Debray,Henri.
Cratylia floribunda seeds were ground and the clean crude saline extract was fractionated into albumin, globulin, prolamin, acidic and basic glutelin protein fractions. These protein fractions were examined for the presence of an endogenous lectin receptor by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, western blot, affinity chromatography on a Sepharose 4B-Cratylia floribunda (CFL) lectin column and kinetic analysis in real time by surface plasmon resonance (SPR). Prolamin was the richest protein fraction although very poor in haemagglutinating activity. Basic glutelin was far the less interesting fraction for lectin activity and protein content, even though this fraction contains considerable amounts of carbohydrates. Lectin was present in all protein...

Expression analysis of a set of genes related to the ripening of bananas and mangoes Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Godoy,Adriana de; Morita,Rodrigo J.; Cordenunsi,Beatriz R.; Lajolo,Franco M.; Nascimento,João Roberto O. do.
During ripening many important physic-chemical changes contribute to fruit quality, and they are precisely determined by gene expression. Specific genes are essential to normal ripening; however, information on gene expression about the majority of tropical fruit, such as bananas and mangoes is limited. In this way, the present study was undertaken with the objective to provide preliminary access to the changes in expression of some genes potentially relevant to banana and mango ripening. To simultaneously evaluate the changes in gene expression, a small collection of genes related to ethylene biosynthesis, starch mobilization, cell wall disassembly, pigment synthesis and ascorbate metabolism was assembled in nylon membranes and probed with cDNA from...

Expression of heat shock protein and trehalose-6-phosphate synthase homologues induced during water deficit in cotton Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Nepomuceno,Alexandre Lima; Oosterhuis,Derrick; Stewart,James McD; Turley,Rickie; Neumaier,Norman; Farias,José Renato Bouças.
Tolerance to drought in plants is not a simple trait, but a complex of mechanisms working in combination to avoid or to resist water deficit. Genotypes that differ in tolerance to water deficit may show qualitative and quantitative differences in gene expression when submitted to drought periods. Four cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) genotypes (Siokra L-23, Stoneville 506, CS 50 and T-1521) with contrasting responses to water deficit stress were studied using the Differential Display (DD) technique to identify and isolate genes which may differ among them. Fifty-two cDNA fragments differentially expressed during water deficit were isolated, cloned and sequenced. Search of gene bank databases showed that two cDNA clones, A12B15-6 and A12B13-1, have high...

Flooding tolerance of tomato genotypes during vegetative and reproductive stages Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Ezin,Vincent; Pena,Robert De La; Ahanchede,Adam.
A greenhouse experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of flooding on two tomato cultivars and two wild related species. Forty days old tomato plants were subjected to a continuous flooding stress of different durations: 0, 2, 4 and 8 days. Plant pots were placed inside larger plastic pots; they were irrigated with excessive quantity of tap water at 25ºC so that the level of water above the surface of soil was 15 cm throughout the flooding period. At the bottom of each plastic pot a drilled hole allowed complete drainage of the pot after flooding. Parameters studied include plant height, number of leaves, leaf length, chlorophyll fluorescence, chlorophyll content, wilting, leaf senescence, adventitious root formation, number of flowers and fruits...

Foliar application of Burkholderia sp. strain TNAU-1 leads to activation of defense responses in chilli (Capsicum annuum L.) Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Madhavan,Srinivasan; Paranidharan,Vaikuntavasan; Velazhahan,Rethinasam.
Induction of phenolics, peroxidase (PO), polyphenol oxidase (PPO), chitinase and thaumatin-like proteins (TLP) in leaves of chilli (Capsicum annuum L.) in response to foliar application with a biocontrol agent Burkholderia sp. strain TNAU-1 was studied. Chilli plants, when sprayed with Burkholderia sp. strain TNAU-1 showed increase in phenolic content one day after application and the maximum accumulation was observed seven days after treatment. Three new peroxidase isozymes (PO-1, PO-2 and PO-3) were induced in chilli leaves upon treatment with Burkholderia sp. strain TNAU-1. The activity of all the peroxidases was at the maximum level three days after treatment and subsequently decreased. Protein extracts obtained from Burkholderia sp. strain TNAU-1...

Foliar nitrogen and changes in free amino acid composition of Solanum lycopersicum under cadmium toxicity: kinetics of 15NH4+ Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Haouari,Chiraz Chaffei; Nasraoui,Afef Hajjaji; Carrayol,Elisa; Lelendais,Maud; Ghorbel,Mohamed Habib; Gouia,Houda.
Glutamate metabolism and amino acid translocation were investigated in the control and cadmium stressed shoots of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum - 63/5 F1), using (15N) ammonium and (15N) glutamate tracers. Regardless of organ type, [15N] ammonium assimilation occurred via glutamine synthetase (EC 6.3.1.2), in the control and stressed plants, and it did not depend on glutamate dehydrogenase (EC 1.4.1.2). The [15N] ammonium and ammonium accumulation patterns support the role of glutamate dehydrogenase in the deamination of [15N] glutamate to provide 2-oxoglutarate and [15N] ammonium. In the presence of cadmium, excess [15N] ammonium was incorporated into asparagine, which served as an additional detoxification molecule. In the presence both of methionine...

Foliar phosphorus supply and CO2 assimilation in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) under water deficit Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Santos,Mauro G. dos; Ribeiro,Rafael V.; Teixeira,Marcelo G.; Oliveira,Ricardo F. de; Pimentel,Carlos.
Two common bean cultivars were grown in pots under greenhouse conditions. Plants were submitted to a foliar Pi spray two days before suspending irrigation, what enhanced net CO2 assimilation rate of Ouro Negro cultivar but did not change significantly the photosynthesis of Carioca cultivar under both water deficit and rehydration periods. The results revealed that a foliar Pi spray induced an up-regulation of photosynthesis in common bean under mild water deficit, with this effect being genotype-dependent.

From leaf to flower: revisiting Goethe's concepts on the ¨metamorphosis¨ of plants Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Dornelas,Marcelo Carnier; Dornelas,Odair.
Goethe’s seminal scientific work, Versuch die Metamorphose der Pflanzen zu erklaren (An Attempt to Interpret the Metamorphosis of Plants) dated from 1790, has created the foundations for many domains of modern plant biology. The archetypal leaf concept, which considers floral organs as modified leaves, besides being the best known has been proven true, following the description of the ABC molecular model of floral organ identity determination during the last decade. Here we analyze the whole theoretical frame of Goethe’s 1790 publication and present two previously misconsidered aspects of this work: The "refinement of the sap" concept as a directional principle and the "cycles of contractions and expansions" as cycles of differential determination of the...

Gas exchange and yield response to foliar phosphorus application in Phaseolus vulgaris L. under drought Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Santos,Mauro Guida dos; Ribeiro,Rafael Vasconcelos; Oliveira,Ricardo Ferraz de; Pimentel,Carlos.
This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of foliar Pi application on gas exchange and yield of bean genotypes submitted to a mild water deficit at the pre-flowering stage. In the first experiment, when extra Pi (10 g.L-1) was sprayed on leaves during water stress or during recovery, there was no effect on gas exchange or yield in the A320, Carioca and Ouro Negro genotypes. However, net CO2 assimilation (A) of A320 and Ouro Negro was less affected, but not significantly, than Carioca at the end of the stress, when Pi was supplied five days before water deficit. In the second experiment, two different doses of Pi (10 and 20 g.Pi L-1) were sprayed five days before water deficit on the Carioca genotype. During the last three days of the mild water...
